Crossing Guard Program for Students

City Leadership Responds to Safety Concerns
In response to ongoing parent concerns regarding safety in the neighborhood, De Marillac recently began its School Crossing Guard Program. This pilot initiative was made possible following a recent meeting with Mayor Gavin Newsom, De Marillac President Michael Daniels, and Christian Q., an eighth grade student at De Marillac. This discussion at the Tenderloin Police Station addressed Christian’s concerns related to drug-dealing, and his family’s various fears in walking the streets of the neighborhood.

Following this conversation, Mayor Newsom directed City Supervisor Bevan Dufty to coordinate implementation of a School Crossing Guard Program to oversee families walking to and from the Tenderloin school. Supervisor Dufty secured private funding from the Police Officers Association and the San Francisco Firefighters, and also facilitated the training of the school guards through the Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA).  Additionally, Dufty is currently working with the MTA to ensure continuation of this program into the future.  Dufty, who first visited De Marillac in the fall and was impressed by its students, hails De Marillac as a “beacon of hope in the Tenderloin.”
