Extended Hours

De Marillac Academy’s Extended Hours Program is one of the hallmark strategies utilized to address students’ learning needs, improve their health and wellness, and expose them to subjects outside the regular curriculum.  In addition, the Extended Hours Program ensures that students remain in a safe and secure school environment during a time of day when many children are prone to at-risk behavior and situations. The Extended Hours Program takes place from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm four days a week.

Forty-five (45) minutes of the two hour block are devoted to a Help and Study Session (HASS), during which students have the opportunity to work on homework with teachers and volunteer tutors. Since most students enter De Marillac performing below grade level, this additional focused learning time is vital to academic achievement. The importance of HASS cannot be overstated, as one of the chief obstacles to student success is the difficulty in completing school work at home. Many students go home to a crowded studio or one-bedroom apartments.  Because of this, finding a suitable place to do homework is often impossible. Also, because many parents do not speak English and/or have little or no formal education, they are unable to answer questions and help their children with homework. Therefore, HASS gives students a quiet place to study and an environment in which their teachers and tutors are present to provide personal assistance if necessary.

If you are interested in volunteering during the Extended Hours period, please contact Don Mullikin, Director of Outreach at (415) 552-5220 or Send Email.
